Why effective communication is important to me

Hello everyone, my name is xudong, a year 2 student majoring in computer engineering.Nice to meet all of you guys.

When I just came to Singapore, I encountered a big culture shock. Since nearly everyone is speaking English, sometimes, it was so frustrated that I could not manage to make myself understood well by others.Even worse, due to the lacking of the communication skills, I to some degree impressed on my Singaporean friends a reserved and passive person, while I am actually not. After that, I realized how significant it is to improve my soft skills.

Also, quite a number of computer engineering modules are project-orientated which involve idea exchanges. In order to survive those modules, there is no denying that I need this module to equip myself with sufficient communication skills and then to be capable of interacting and cooperating with my teammates effectively . Furthermore, as I am going to graduate one day, to get the jobs I want also requires good communication skills which may leads to give a more comprehensive delivery and to leave a better impression during the interviews than those without.

finally, if I can communicate with people well, there will be more chances for me to make friends too and know them well. as a non-native English speaker, to make a new friend is easy by just asking questions about basic information "what's your name" "where are you from?" etc.; however, to know a friend deeper may involve emotional conversation. Suitable word choices and good organization of sentences to express the right feelings that I hold in my mind.

That is why I choose this module to improve my soft skills.
PS: hope we can become friends too.

  1. Hello! Xudong~ You’ve put your statement is a more pragmatic way, which is intimately connected with culture shock, school work, future career and friendship. I’d like to show empathy for some of your experiences. For instance, the culture shock was also the thing that gives me a headache when I first came to Singapore. I even had no idea how to start a conversation with the Singaporeans. You may also struggle for some time before getting it over. What’s more, I totally agree that if you want to want to know a friend deeper, you should have emotional conversations. We are supposed to learn to give utterances via appropriate words and expressions. I am glad to be your friend~Hope you will have more and more friends.

  2. As a foreign student here, I have exactly the same experience when I just reached Singapore. I was suddenly immersed in an environment full of strangers. Thus, I encountered a harsh time to communicate with others. However, I realized that, to communicate effectively, the first step is to set the right attitude. That is, always be prepared to speak and never be intimidated to speak. And remember one thing, practice makes perfect.
